I've been reading all the currently 3 reviews of this book and I must admit I strongly agree with J. Cadima that the first review of this book was utterly rubbish which I'm afraid was made by a person who might perhaps have only reminiscence of calculus. Now that this is settled then on to my review.

This book is certainly not for beginners to calculus as I deem the level of this book to be perhaps not college level then in the immediate vicinity of college level least high school level. If you master algebra on the intermediate level then you should by all means not face any particular obstacles (ISBN: 0131467735).

Before I go into detail about the book I must state without the solution manual (ISBN: 0471441724) to this book you might find yourself frequently in difficulties regarding solving the problems as they have a habit of becoming incredibly sticky because you've taken to many things for granted - At least that was my initial experience, but solving all the exercises for the most part would eliminate many of the problems as you become acquainted with the best practice of how to solve these problems.

In the appendences there are answers to odd-numbered exercise but even so, the solution manual covers however only these odd exercises but even so it's indispensable as you get a reasonable explanation to the exercise in question. I must note however that in the appendices A-G there's some introductory trigonometry reviews e.g. but that only covers 5% of the book.

The book covers all the things that you might prefer of a book of this magnitude and it does in so very detailed and thoroughly with many good examples and most importantly of the entire book is very well written and you should be able to understand it with less effort than you might expect.

Regarding the exercises there's plenty of them and they and increase severity and the 6 horizon modules contains difficult material only suited for the most ambitiously minded reader - Let me just admit that a counterclockwise vortex flow drained all my cerebral cells very quickly c",)

Some of the theorems and rules discussed in the book concerns L'Hopital's Rule, Rolle's Theorem, Kepler's Law, Lagrange Multipliers, Jacobians and Tayler series. As a matter of secondary importance there's throughout the book minor biographicals of all the important mathematicians from ancient times till present like Archimedes, Isaac Newton, Gottfried Leibniz, Leonhard Euler, Ren? Descarts, Johannes Kepler and many many more,

The bottomline is that I'm in a position where I can strongly recommend this book based on the marvelous writing, good examples and many intriguing exercises. Note however that this edition is the 7th edition published 2001 whereas the 8th edition was published in 2005. This is the early transcendental edition but there exists also a late transcendental edition.

Great Book! - Fernando Gonzales - Cadiz, Spain
This book was bought because it was on the syllabus, otherwise we'd fail the course. anyway, the book is very well thought out for math wizzes and it's dedicated Homework sections are very encouraging for those who are beginning to understand college level Calculus. If you have a good math instructor you may do well in the course with this book. Overall the book has its highlights such as the colourful graphs and pictures... Stuff that will make you want to turn the pages for non-math majors. Overall it's a fun book (for math majors) and it's filled with numerous chapters for one to read and try to understand! The chapters are very didactic and with that in mind you will unravel your mathematical nature...For those who buy this book for the homework, relax, it has the answers in the back.
